Wireless Mesh Networking

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) are believed to be a highly promising technology and will play an increasingly important role in future generation wireless mobile networks. WMN is characterized by dynamic self-organization, self-configuration and self-healing to enable quick deployment, easy maintenance, low cost, high scalability and reliable services, as well as enhancing network capacity, connectivity and resilience. Due to these advantages, international standardization organizations are actively calling for specifications for mesh networking modes, e.g., IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.15, IEEE 802.16 and IEEE 802.20. As a great extension to the ad hoc network, WMN is becoming an important mode complementary to the infrastructurebased wireless networks. The experiences obtained from studying and deploying WMN provide us knowledge and reference to the future networks evolution.
